Is this the right speed controller? Is there a cheaper one?

I have a this fan and filter combo for a 2x4x6 tent. http://growershouse.com/active-air-6-in-inline-duct-fan-carbon-filter-combo-6x16

I'm trying to find a good speed controller to reduce noise and suction. I was going to get the 20$ Active Air controller here https://www.amazon.com/Active-Air-A...9&sr=8-1&keywords=active+air+speed+controller

However after doing some reading I see those might be a fire hazard and maybe useless for noise. Instead I read to use a "variac" controller. Problem is they seem confusing and I don't know how to tell which one I need.

I found this linked in a thread but I have no clue if it will go with my fan or not. https://www.circuitspecialists.com/variac-variable-ac-ps05kva.html Is that what I need? Anyone know of a comparable but cheaper one or some cheaper alternative that won't catch fire?
