**Is this fan too much for my Grow Tent?** 11/18/11

Its a 6" Can Fan Max. My grow tent is 22"wide x 36" long x and 72" tall. Running a 400watt, 6" Air cooled Reflector - with built in cool tube. The max fans' lowest level is 201 CFM. I need it to be quiet. I dont know the the sound rating, but i heard this is good. What do you growers think, should i get this, or stick with a regular 6" inline duct fan? The problem with a regular duct fan, is that after a month, it starts to squeak and sometimes turns off, plus the fan blades stop, then starts up again. When working, it works great, and gets the air out. So, please give me your best advice...bongsmilie

the inline duct fans suck ass...that is a technical description. That is a good fan, but like any fan, the noise comes from pushing air... so you either have a quiet fan that doesn't do anything, or a noisy fan that blows the house down.

My advice, stick with that fan and buy yourself a speed controller to dial in a flow rate and noise level you are comfortable with. You can always house the box in a DIY sound proof box to help control the noise. Something out of 1/2" mdf lines with foam would work exceptionally well.

ps. I have a nice speed controller that I am not using that I can mail to you for $15. this is not a plug...you should get a speed controller, even if it isn't mine.

Thanks legallyflying! I get your point. But this fan has a 3 setting switch already. How would I put another switch on it? And can a new switch, actually make it lower then 201 CFM, which is the lowest setting?

The speed controller plugs into the socket, and your fan plugs into the speed controller, so it operates independently of your fan's three different settings; that is unless I'm misunderstanding something.

So if my fans setting is on low at 201 CFM, then when i plug it into the speed controller, it can even lower that more below 201CFM?

Exactly.

this is the one I have. If it has three settings already then your probably fine. You may find that you want more airflow than 200cfm depending on temps. ALWAYS nice to have soem headroom. PLus you can expand when you start getting the grow addiction. (which is very addicting).

With a duct fan, is around 80-90 degrees during flower and humidity is 80%.

Well thanks guys, for your help. I just bought me the fan and hope to see how well it works and what i need to do to better it, if i need to.
