Ionizers good or bad?

My friend some years ago had a hydro set up and got an insane root system by plugging an air pump directly into the rockwool.
The roots must have been longer than the plants at some points-we're talking over 2 foot roots that snuck down the hosing and into the reservoir.

He also at some point had his air pump connected directly to a high output but non-toxic ionizer.

I've heard this will kill plants but at the same time, I know they are common in a lot of indoor nurseries and hydroponics shops.

So what's the real deal here?

Ionizers create 03 (ozone) which is bad for people and bad for plants. Sharper image filed for bankruptsy because their popular ionic breeze was found to generate unsafe levels of the stuff.

Aye man... Fuck that fine ass bitch!
