Hi folks,
Newbie here. Been reading around a little while and thought I'd finally sign up now I have a little project. Wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions / get any feedback.
Me: 31, male, Brit, smoking the good stuff since 15, fairly up to date with strains, grow strategies etc but little experience actually doing it.
Grow experience: not my first grow, I had two prior attempts in grow tents back in the UK about 12 years ago growing 6 then 10. Neither were amazing but not terrible but got the initial learning curve out the way. Long way to go tho. Both were under 400w hps in soil.
So I have decided to get back into it, very small set up but well made / designed I think.
I built myself a cupboard, it's about 2ft x 2ft x 6"6 (60cm x 60cm x 200cm). It's actually an ikea cupboard with a door hard fixed to the back to replace the typical flimsy board you get. (see migro cupboard on the tube of you, that's what I replicated)
I've installed homemade filter using bathroom extractor and active carbon at top of cupboard, intake vent at the bottom, sealant around the doors.
Runs silent, maintains good temp 75-85 lights on and 60-70 off, light sealed.
Humidity bit low at high 30s with light on to start but not too concerned as I know that becomes more of a battle to keep down as time goes on. Around 60 with light off.
Current grow background :
A lot has happened in the last decade and I've joined the LED brigade, specifically a 400w COB, full spectrum. It's no specific brand, bought locally, and I'm sure it's fit for the job, whilst no doubt there are better specs versions (not fussed right now).
I'm starting off with 3 plants, each in 3 gallon square pots, more holes added for drainage / air. I have 1 x auto (gifted skunk #1) and 2 x bag seed (I refer to as wildlings).
Using solely bio bizz products, light mix soil mixed with 40% added perlite.
Watering from the tap - sits in 7 gallon bucket overnight. I live in Switzerland so water quality is damn good. I use apple cider vinegar to ph down to 7.3 (biobizz advice I've seen says that's perfectly fine and not to use chemical ph down after adding my organic nutes / stimulators). Run off is 6.4.
Auto was planted in soil after germinating 2 weeks ago. Wildlings 2 days later. Cup until sink and wet tissue method.
2 WEEKS IN:
The Auto:
After an initial good start and nice growth, I begun to question the size of it it's growth. It seemed stunted and not wanting to stretch. It had nice growth, several nodes, nice but small true leaves it was just a mini version. I thought maybe this is just how some autos are but then began to notice the first two 3 pointer leaves curl and feel dry.
Despite 2ft light distance I think it was light stress. So we're now up to 3ft.
The wildlings:
The two wildlings are several days behind. I had 3 auto seeds but two didn't germinate (They wee two years old, but kept safe and from sensiseeds?!).
So the wildlings came in as back up and started in smaller pots. The pots were lower, and they're normal / non auto seeds, I got much bigger starting growth and leaves, more pointed leaves than the rounded autos (hoping not sativa). So this supported my low light theory.
Wildlings were transplanted to 3 gallon pots two days ago having rooted out their smaller pots in 11 days.
Questions / issues:
I'm surprised by my light stress at 2ft. Is this purely because seedlings or is 400w led cob with reflective lens more powerful than I give credit for?
I'm concerned this will eat into my height as the light can only go up another foot, so should the plants become more robust as they grow?
Do Led's impact soil differently? Unlike under hps, despite having good temps the soil doesn't seem to be drying very quickly at all. I am concerned I made a big error pre soaking my 3 gallon pots and leaving for 48hours. As it seems the soil never truly has dried from that.
Yet the plants have needed or seemed to need a water two days ago which I did with the transplanting of the wildlings, but I left the auto as still moist soil and I see roots finally reaching the bottom.
I used root juice, half strength with the first ever water.
2 days ago continued with root juice and added half strength bio grow and heaven to my transplanted wildling feed. I am misting with low strength alg-a-mic to recover from the light stress.
Now I just got light back from 24 hour power cut (not a common occurrence I should have to worry about) and notice growth and bit of stretching. But very light coloured green, almost yellow new leaves. Existing leaves, despite the feed two days ago, heavy buckets and lights back on, are bit floppy and not perky. Result of transplant shock perhaps?
Anyway that's enough for now.
Will keep you updated
