Hi all, i am looking into getting a 90w led ufo light but i've noticed that they come in a variety of colors. i am only wanting it for the flowering period so i was thinking all red leds but i just wanted to know if this would be a wise choice or should i go for one with red, blue 8:1? or even one with red, blue and orange? i would also like to know what the orange leds are good for, as i noticed that blue is for veg and red is for flower. please help me someone :eyesmoke::confused:

Yeah you got most of it right; it would be better to have the mixed spectrum of red and blue for flower, but have a majority be red. So i guess the 8:1 would be ok, better to find a 8:2 probably (if it exists).

Thanks for that advice purplehazin, i don't suppose you know whether or not the orange led has any significant benefit to the flowering stage and if so what is it???

I would leave LED lights alone for now. Especially for using them for growing Cannabis.

They just haven't been around long enough.. and they don't put out enough lumens to where it would be beneficial to the plant.. more of a waste of money and time than anything.

Give the LED technology a few years to improve their lighting.. and then maybe they'll have LED lights that have sufficient lumen output, that would actually be of some use to growing Cannabis.

In short, they just don't have the light output.. or lumens (which is most important..) to grow with.

Just MO on the subject. ;) I would stick with CFL lighting.. or MH/HPS.

I use HPS/MH lighting for the tops of my plants.. and then for side lighting.. I use a couple CFL lights on the side.. to help get light to the sides and to the insides of the foliage of my plants. Works great too.

That's MO.

peace.

Orange is good for flowering as well. An HPS light emits an orange glow, a color temp of around 2000K. So the red will be lower than that. It's usually a good idea to have a good mix of spectrum. So, if you can get a ration like 6red, 3 orange, 1 blue; Something like that

Not quite true about the lumens... I'll let Brick Top explain.

The most impressive grow thread I ever followed was a totally LED grow. Several years back, on a similar board that is now defunct, a member came into a tidy sum of money and decided to dump his HID lighting and switch to LED lighting. He researched to find the very best LED lights and he purchased a good number of different styles.

Above his plants he had two large LED panels. He built what I call portable posts for the lack of a better term, 4 X 4 posts cut in sections that would stack on top of each other, with a flat piece of plywood attached to the bottom of each portable post set for balance.

Each section of stackable post was long enough to hold an LED light bar. On some portable posts he attached LED light bars to one side and on others he attached LED light bars to all four sides. He ringed his plants with portable posts with an LED on one side and once the top LED light panels were raised high enough he added more portable posts with LED light bars on all four sides between his plants. Each time the top LED lighting was raised enough for another section of portable post with more LED light bars on them he would add another section.

His plants were the thickest most lush plants I have ever seen grown indoors. The colas were massive and the buds on the lowest portions of plants were as large or larger than most I see people get just under the bottom of their colas, meaning larger than most people’s very biggest buds other than colas are.

The key to LED lighting is to purchase the highest grade LED lights available and to purchase them in sufficient numbers AND then use them in a way that they will be able to do the very most they can for the plants growing from their light.

If people did that they would throw rocks at CFLs and HID lighting and never use either ever again. In most cases people purchase low quality LEDs because of price, and purchase too few of them, again because of price, and then they tend to expect too much from them and use them incorrectly. The result is a bad rap against LED lighting when it should instead be on those who should never have spent their money on LED lighting in the first place considering how they did it.

great info guys, i know that led lights dont give out as many lumens as HPS or MH but i need to use it as the space where im gonna crop is quite small and too hot at this time of year, ive got 4 x 400w hps lights but they give off far too much heat which put me on top with the po's and also my plants suffer. i cant even put 1 400w in there as the temp is around 40c, this is a new place that im setting up in but it isnt the best so i thought i would get a ufo and also a couple of cfl lights in there to keep the temp from getting too high. there is 1 more thing i could do with some advice on and that is what color cfl lights would be best to go in with the 90w ufo (if the ufo is mostly red with a few blue and possibly a few orange) ?? bongsmilie

im going to correct myself what i meant by ' i know that led lights dont give out as many lumens as HPS or MH' is i know that i wont get as much weight in bud (or at least im under the impression) with a 90w led light than the amount that i would get from using a 400w HPS (in ideal enviroment).

yeah thats a bullshit post created by a guy that sells led systems there is no way you can get the penetration of a hid light with leds sorry to piss on your parade!!! leds are garbage maybe in ten years but for now you would have to match the power output of a hid and you still will not get the same results I've seen them used they suck just get a hps system you'll be happy that you did beleive me.

No, led's are not garbage. They work great as supplemental lighting with a HID https://www.rollitup.org/indoor-growing/338472-my-first-1000w-grow-led.html
