I was given a 600W Electronic Ballast that was meant for 240V only......but

I won an electric Lumatex 600W 240V ballast and grow hood on 4/20 from a Medical Marijuana Center out here in Denver. The MMC told me that I was able to replace the 240V plug for a 120V plug and just use that, no worries (I am unable to rewire the fuse box or plugs since I am renting). I was wondering, is this ok to do? I am currently doing this, and the lights come on no problem. But, will this destroy my ballast? Any suggestions on what I could do?

also, the MMC had mentioned to me that if the ballast did ever go bad I was able to return it at the store they purchased it from in Aurora, CO. So, I guess if it goes bad, I may not have to worry as much.
