I want to switch from HID to LED this year but I need guidance

Is cob still a player in the game or is it all about the quantum boards right now?

I want to make the switch over to led this year. 2 of my ballasts died recently and instead of continuing to replace old technology I figured I should make the move to led. I've been doing some reading and watching videos the past few days but I'm still a bit confused on what direction to go.


also I have an old dead Mars II unit. Is it worth modding with cobs or should I just throw it away and get quantum boards? how much savings am I looking at modding it over a qb.

cobs/boards/strips all are similar in cost effectiveness right now. for any of them its about running the latest gear at low enough current to get the target efficiency you want

modding your mars unit right now to have a fixture you can use to get the hang of the intricacies of using LED isnt the worst idea.... LED prices are continuously falling you can wrap your head around it then buy in a few months when you know more

I would say its not worth it from a savings perspective b.c. what are you really scrapping from it since everything in it is hot garbage? Quantum boards at low enough currents can be hung as is. Simple and cheap. That said, my veg lamp is a retrofit that I built off a dead yesteryear LED and you learn a lot with a project like that while also having some fun.
