i have a ballast question

I want to put my ballasts on a 20/4 schedule instead of 24/0. if I hook it up to a timer, will it possibly blow out my light when it turns on and off automatically?

you need a heavy duty one. Otherwise yes, it will kill a standard timer quite quickly. it wont hurt the light itself, but the timer will completely stop working and turning them on and off.

Use a contactor - a heavy duty relay - here is mine - relay is rated at 30A. Timer then only switches a small current.

i've got my digital timer for 9-10 euro. up to 16 amps (230V - 3600W) 2 years waranty... works ok with 250W HPS

in a low quality timer the contactors can fuse and you will get again 24/0

I'm with Spanishfly on this one. I used various timers over the years. Then I switched to a Relay that's controlled by any old timer that keeps good time. There's no heavy wattage passing thru the timer anymore. The timer only turns the Relay off and on. No more melted timers and associated fire hazard. I have the one made by Green Air and using 240 volts. It operates 4 1K lights for a total current draw of 20 amps. I could safley run 6 lights with this set up. It wasn't expensive either.

I'm using only digital timers - the ones with the battery.
when theres a power out they don't lose count of the time.
