how to top a plant

ok here's the thing i know why you top them but i have no clue how to. if someone could type up a how to top bud plants for dummies that would be much appreciated

how tall are your plants, how many nodes, how tall do you want them to finish, strain...it all comes into play. i usually top when there are about 5-6 good nodes, veg for another couple of weeks training the new growth if needed, then flower to get a nice bush around 2 ft give or take
