How to keep plants short? Need to downsize due to uni.

So, I'll be moving due to uni for a while, and only have half a closet to grow in, capped at 130cm height.

I've only started indoor growing in march. I've grown autos in an attempt to keep size down in my room already, but they end up 4.5 ft tall, yield around 6-8ounces, and total around 100 days.

Would I be better off growing an indica heavy photo 12/12 from seed to limit growth?

I have a 60x50x130 area in a closet I plan to use, but the autos I've been growing over the last few months will fill that in four weeks.

What is the best way to keep plants compact? this was the last GDP around day 70 (went for 90). Wouldn't fit in a 2x1.6 I'd you removed half of it.

That was in a 120x60x180cm tent and the light was only 12" from the top, tied straight to the frame. 1800umol in the hotspot, and hot up there.

Light spectrum and intensity are the biggest factors in plant height.

I believe the blue spectrum is best for keeping them stumpy.

This is 11 days old since popping. Nice and short

Scrog net?
I tried that last time and failed miserably. Over 14 days it grew a few feet and the net could not be seen...I placed the net 45cm above the pots and just gave up lol.

Ill into how to do it properly next time. That was two plants in a 2x4. One of those plants could have filled the entire 2x4 ScrOG net over a week easy.

So much work...such a lazy person.

I've been looking in to that. I'm doing a 12/12 from seed now with a few household bulbs...it's the shortest plant I've grown so far.. day 15. It might not be a coincidence that there's a few 450nm diodes and a good chunk of 4000k in there that helped.

I've got a bunch of bare PCBs (10s5p), a reflow station and a bunch of epistar 3w cob chips. 4000k, 380nm, 405nm and 3500k here. Should make a board with higher blue and see how we go.

Not sure how to answer your question, but I’m glad to see another GDP on here, and the fact it took 90 days. I’m on 77 today, and was kind of wondering how long it might take.

At 90 days it could have gone another week or so easy. It had all brown pistils, and most had receded, but the calyx had only begin to swell on the top half of the plant. The trichs were milky, but only a small percentage were amber....a very small percentage. Had to pull due to space, smell and moving. Bud ended up looking good though despite.

The breeder stated 55-60 days flower and 75 day complete cycle, and I found 90 to be a tad short...

Day 80 for comparison, pulled day 93.

I'm not the most knowledgeable on autos, but I thought there were a few strains made to stay short...lowryder of course or dwarf strains...I am growing a Frosted Skywalker from Mosca and the little shit in a 3gal pot is a foot tall. I thought maybe I got a runt but another grower on here grew a couple and he said his were short too.

I figured actually looking into genetics a bit more might help.. most of the seedbanks here don't mention the original breeder so I just skipped over it. Pretty much every single seed on our local bank is quoted as 90-120cm, and heavy yielding.

I've noticed a lot of the fastbuds plants generally stay shorter, and have seen some insanely stout and thick autos here. I wish we had the same choice over here.

This is at day 61 from when she first popped up. (Cleaned out the underbrush shit yesterday)
That's exactly what I'm looking for.. that's actually pretty solid for 61 days as well.. stretch was out of control last time, and as you can see with the GDP, they buds never really connected up and formed big colas.

Ive heard plants can also stretch as a response to intense DLI without CO2, and I was running close to 1800umol 18/6.

I'm actually having better luck this time with a few household bulbs (64w all up) and 12/12 which I can't believe. I assumed I was going to have a string bean, but I needed to try something different.

I like the idea of smaller plants as well in general...three or four different strains in a 2x4 would be amazing.

Has anyone here ran photos 12/12 from seed? Could be a way to save elec, keep heat down and get smaller plants.

I've ran autos simply because I'm lazy and veg plants to sell while others are flowering.

Photos can work great on 12/12 from seed. They will typically stay smaller and more manageable. You can often times grow more of them as small plants instead of growing 1-2 big plants and get similar yields, without spending money on veg time and lighting.

I had some of these Blurples, where all ladies would have fat ass stalks and massive rootballs, leaves were fatter, but vertical growth was slowed right down and in some cases almost nonexistent after flip. Everything was very compacted, flowers were smaller compred to modern LED but were very solid. The lights had a mix of colors and I experimented by sticking black tape over just the 7500K diodes on half the lights, and on that run the ladies without the 7500K finished 'normal' height and shape while the ones beneath the uncovered lights stayed very short and compact.

Other times I have used cheap 2200K HPS after flip and everything grew stupidly tall, spindly, and weak. Food for thought.

But to start I would say an Indica heavy photo strain with extensive LST would be a good way to go.

Thanks for the info. Noted. I may have to even go a little longer.
