How to deal with going OUT OF TOWN

I am leaving for 5 days but I am curious if this watering method will work.

I have 5 gallon pots(some 3) that require about half a gallon to 3/4 for run off every other day. I figure if I water till runoff that will give me 3 days till they need to be watered again.

They have perlite but I was wondering if I could extend the need to water by putting like 1-1/2 inch layer of water soaked perlite before I leave so that when the soil needs it, it will take it. Might give me extra day or 2?

Anyone has any other ideas on how to set this up so when I come home I don't have dead plants.....

I don't know how well that will work. You could get the little water wands that work through wicking. Or you can get an autowater like blumat.

Any exp with either? I looked into the glass globes but there isn't enough water for them to hold. I like this providing I don't come home to a flood.
