Approximately how long do the buds have to finish once the hairs start turning orange? Any and all feedback is appreciated.

depends on the strain but about 2-4 weeks.

Different strains color in @ different rates. Best way to judge done-ness is to look with a magnifier of some sort, a jeweler's loupe being the best way, but there are cheapies that will do fine.

Clear trichs are an indication of 'not ready quite yet'
Cloudy trichs will usually result in a more 'up' buzz
Amber colors will tend to deliver that 'couchlocked' feeling.
The more amber, the stonier.

trichs will erupt clear, then color in as the plant matures. the biggest, easiest to see one will be close to the bud center. the stem will cloud and color in first, then the rounded head.
