How long could a clone last??

I want to take a clone of my plant (which would be around the middle of may) but i wouldnt be able 2 grow again untill muc later in the year (like late august the earliest). Wouldm y clone last in water for that long of would it just die??? OR are there any ways 2 preserve clones for later use???
