I use this rule of thumb
250w 6"
400w 8"
600w 10-12"
1000w 12"-14"
or the closer you get the better lumens for plant just don't burn them learn whats best for your light with practice

the best 'rule of thumb' for light height is to posistion the lights as close as u can without frying your girls. u also have to be careful of whats called 'light bleaching', thats when the lights overwhelm your plants. i use the following system:

1. place your hand palm down over the top of your plant(s), lower the lights until it is uncomfortable to the point that u cant leave ur hand there for at least 30 seconds.then raise the light 2 or 3 inches and that should work. DO NOT let a HPS or MH bulb touch your skin when they are powered on!!! u WILL get burnt and it may even cause the bulb to explode. hope this helps...

depends on the room temps and how much air is going thought the hood

you could get as close as 8" from the top of the plants but the closer to the top of the plants the smaller the light foot print is

I have used a air-cooled hood for years and I keep my hood 12" above the plants

Like 24 degrees mate, and thanks for the reply I have to keep them right height because I have bigger plants at the back and the coverage doesn't do it when I have them to close
