Yea, it could be because you're picking it too early. It could because of temp. Air cooled lights will probably help keep the plants from stretching. Try to keep the nodes as close together as you can. I've heard that vegging under CFL's will give you closer (.5") spacing than HID(1-2"). I've never used CFL's though.

How far away from the top of your plants is your light? The closer you can get it the denser the bud, the further away it is the lighter the bud.

my lights are light 18 inches away
i used b looms bat guano and molases
lots of things can help you get denser buds:

If you are using CFls your lights need to be close. I have found that out.
Strain also helps. My first time i grew some really crappy bag seed. the plants were very slow growing and the buds were very fluffy and airy. Also small buds. Then after that I got some kind of kush and i noticed right off the huge difference genetics makes. The new plants were big and grew fast and strong. The buds were totally dense and big. Was really great smoke.
Nutrients also can make a really big difference. I never buy expensive nutrients because i jsut grow for myself, but I usually get some what decent nutrients from my local greenhouse. 12$ for 400g of flowering nutes isnt bad at all. compared to what you would pay for some dr hornby or fox farm. Then use mollases. mollases is awesome, it will make ur buds tighter and bigger, sweeter and idk about trichs but im sure it helps.

Could not have said it better. I love using CFL's for veg. They can stay right on top of the plants and they don't generate very much heat at all.
