hookah charcoal alternative

does anyone know if you can smoke a hookah using something other than charcoal?

i would totally like to know, the charcoal is a bitch to light, takes forever and its just crap

i once ran out of coals when smoking outside. so i just used the wood embers from small fire made of wood.
