What you are looking for is some nice close nodal formation (close branches) before you switch as if you arent experienced then growing from hps from early on can cause stretching. Having said that you can grow fromd day one with hps but you wiont get the same results as starting with high powered cfls. I start with a 250watt cfl and after 2 weeks switch to hps.18/6 for schedule.

put them under a hps when your plant is about 6-8 inches tall and plug it into a timer thats is on 18 hours of daylight and 6 hours of night.

u could also go directly to 24/0 light schedule but some people dont like paying that much electricity.

to my first poster: im not sure what i want i just want them to bud good and produce a good amount. they are now 5 inches tall but theyre a weird breed because they are yet to produce branches.

They are probably stretched and dont have enough light to allow the plant to produce 'branches'. Nothing to do with strain.
