Help with repellents

I'm growing outdoors and my plants are just showing first signs of flowering, I have seen a good amount of insects on my plants, mostly wooly aphids. I read about the repellents in the growFAQ but I was wondering if i should get these repellents near the buds or just spray the leaves. Most of them contain detergents and that doesn't seem like detergent should get near the buds. Any help with repellents that wont damage my buds would be very helpful, also should i be worried about the insects eating the buds or will they stick mostly to the leaves, there aren't aphids many just one every couple of days and no major leaf damage has been done to my plants.
