HELP PLEASE Can " ROOTS" be cut...?

Growingin Aero Garden I've got 1 plant & the roots have grown so much
that they are binding up ? Turning slight brown in middle
When I went flush thats when i noticed the Big Ball of ROOTS !
Can I do any cutting of roots ?


Note- Plant is 40 days old, 10' high & Bushy like I've never seen
This 1 Plant has covered the whole AG unit !!!

i hope you dont have a 10 foot plant growing out of an aero garden , lol

i wouldn't cut the roots though

I've had roots tangle and yes I did cut them apart and I see no harm in it. I watched a video by rossman, he's a member here on RIU. Anyway, he had a tote with 6 plants in it and he had a bunch of roots all tangled up and he just took a pair of scissors and cut them apart.

So I like to jump in head fist and did it to two of mine and I seen no ill effects. Now just don't go hacking away, use your head and cut just what you need to get the job done.

Also I tried to find that video but I failed.

Do u think the small brown build-up , is that a sign of Root Rot...? Just wondering

No smell that I noticed , but I will ck in 45 min. when lights go off. I did inspect them when I flushed & they're white
no slimmy feel just a brown spot 1"x 2" or so.

I've had this happen as well in a 5 plant tote but like you, was hesitant about trying to cut the root mass. But I'm paranoid of root rot in DWC, so I ended up just running another airline from a small pump and just worked it into the middle/bottom of the root mass - no airstone attached. Didn't run into any issues but the staining never went away.

Here's a documented step-by-step of a guy that routinely cuts off about 2/3rds of the root mass from the plants in DWC - hope it helps:

roots are the building block for your plant and bud growth. cutting them will lower plant growth and you will end up with smaller buds. That is the reason Bonsai Trees roots are cut annually (to keep the plants small). let the roots grow if you want a good yield.

Root pruning is perfectly fine but dont take too much. It will actually promote root branching similar to what an air pot would do.

The brown spots could just be from your nutrients. (Try this with non organic grows only). I know several growers who have used Clorox bleach @ 1 tsp per gallon to kill off any signs of fungus/bacteria in their reservoir. Or if you have a hydro shop near by you can use H2O2 and get the same results (but the bleach is cheaper).

Thanks Taowolf ,I ck'd the vid. on cutting , very interesting. Its amazing the diff. opinion u get. I did add alittle extra B-1
I guess I'll see what takes place in the next day or two, Then I'll cut roots w/nothing too lose

Hey BigV1976, what is root branching ?

Ofcoarse their are different opinions as some people don't know what the he'll they are talking about. "roots are the building blocks" blah blah blah.
Don't go crazy or anything but cutting your roots is perfectly fine. Like someone said above, it will stimulate more root development. It's the guiding physiological principle behind aero pruning. When a plant's roots encounter a blockage (or are pruned) they will grow roots in other locations. B1 and thiamine is the right addative.
