Help, new under current H20 grower. questions.

Hey guys, new to the hydro world so I would appreciate ANY help I can get! I've done a ton of research but as we all know experience is the best knowledge.

Here's what I have going on. I have under current hydro set up, 4 tanks at 7 gallons each and 1 resivour at 7 gallons. I have 4 clones with 5 sets of leafs or less, I just transplanted them from soil 3 days ago. They are in hydroton. I'm using Advanced nutrients PH perfect, micro, veg, bloom. I also have the sensizym.

Water temp is 72 degrees Fahrenheit. PPM is 350. My ph I try keeping around 5.5 but each day it jumps to 6.2 or higher. Its only been three days. I'm using the hydro logic small boy de-chlorinator and sediment filter for water, when I filled my tanks.

My questions are-
1- why is my ph rising? Is it normal?
2- where should my PPM be at my stage?
3- when should I start using sensizym?

I appreciate all the help I can get! Thanks guys!

Yes its normal for PH to rise, it rises due to plants consuming the mineral salts...normally anyways.

Try increasing your PPMs and see if the PH rises as quickly.

If you started your seed / cuttings in soil-----don't do that. When starting seed, I use 16oz cups filled with vermiculite and 1/4 strength bloom formula---- much easier to rinse off before moving to water culture.

I agree with redi jedi about bumping up your ppms.

If you just transplanted them recently, I'll bet the roots are not out of the pots yet and into the water. If this is the case, your ph really should not change at all because your new plants are not even really consuming nutes or water at this point. I have a diy undercurrent system and recently in the last 4 days transplanted 2 from soil to the hydro system because 2 in my system were not the best, but that was due to me, not the system. Anyway, are you ph-ing your water before you fill the pots, or are you filling the system, then adding nutes/ph? I now fill a large trash bin with ~28 gal ro water, add my nutes, etc, then ph the water. After that I pump that water into the already drained system. My girls are reaching the water and thriving, but the ph stays relatively the same. Are you using ro water? what is the ph of the water you are using prior to mixing? I'm running Lucas formula GH micro and bloom with DM zone and cal-mag. When I make the solution, the ppm's are at 900ish. The only issue I can remember with ph was when I filled the system first, added nutes, etc, and then ph'd the system. The ph was higher for 2 days in a row before it stabilized and I figured this was because I was not giving enough time for the system to adjust. But if nothing is really happening to your water system, ie: no real roots, I dont' see why the ph should change...hard to say.

I appreciate the reply. Yes i added water from a dechlorination and sediment filter added nutrients then ph'd the water. The PH is steady now. But the roots are growing quick. I started at a low ppm and worked up slow. Im still only in the 610 range and im on my 8th day. But im. Noticeing very datk green leafs. As if they are getting to much nitrogen, then another plant looks as if its not getting enough mag, this is my first hydro grow. I have a custom under current dwc set up with air stones in each pot with a big air pump. Im running PH around 5.9 to 6.0. But i just lowered it to 5.5 to see if that will help. But im noticeing some of my plants are getting too much nitrogen and and a few leafs are having that "over watered" look. Im keeping a journal and keeping track of everything. Im using advanced nutrients l. Micro, grow, bloom. With inculant and sensizym.

I can't speak for the Advanced line-up for hydro personally, but I'm running Lucas formula which is just GH micro and bloom. The formula leaves out the 'grow' formula basically because the micro has enough nitrogen by itself. I'm sure most 3 part nutes are relatively the same, so maybe back off the 'grow' portion a little. On my first run I was using all 3 parts and I did get some nitrogen toxicity and 'the claw' but it was def an excess nitrogen issue. I switched to lucas, and that seemed to solve the excess nitrogen issue in my case. Not to mention, they look pretty good to me, and they do take some time to 'recover', especially when they are small like that and do not have large root development yet. The 2 I transferred from soil to hydro looked like crap for a good week until just recently when the roots started coming out of the pots and touching the water. Also don't forget, the bigger they get, the faster they grow. The 4 that have been in my system from the beginning are starting to go ape shit crazy. Patience.

Got it. Thanks for the advice. Also just a question. My pots are about 2" in the water, are they not supposed to be? I have had them in there for 8 days now and some of the roots are already a foot long or so. They are growing fast.

I assume you mean the pots are submerged about 2"?
If so, you might want to drop your water level about 2 inches or so. Ideally, you want to create a little gap between the water and the bottom of your pots.

Wow did not know that. Its a under current H20 system. I never knew they had to have a air gap. Haha well shit ill lower the water level to just below the pots. Thanks

That is how I have mine right now, just below the pots, but the roots are coming out of them big time. For the 2 that have roots just now coming out of the baskets, I've been top feeding them a couple times a day, and the roots are now feeding themselves. Are your roots coming out of the pots yet?

Yes they are definitely growing fast. Only been in 8 days and the longest roots are probably around 1 foot. I transplanted from dirt, and sunk the pots 2" deep in water. But i didn't know you were2 supposed to do that. I just lowered them there is a small air gap now. Maybe that will help with the "claw" look. Also i turned my LED light off and noticed they are not as dark as I thought. But the one plant still looks like it has a defencie. Never used LED till now. It works great.

I'm in the current culture systems and in veg I've had 4" tall healthy plants with the ppm between 250-350 on the 500 scale. Look at their feed chat... sounds like your ppm is way too high for this system. Peak flowing gets like 650-700ppm

Whose feed chart? Cultured Solutions?

I noticed thats the trend for UC users over at thcfarmer...

Yeah cultured solutions chart. Never used the high aeration feed chart though and am going to try it next round. Tops out at 350 ppm on 500 scale! Seems impossible but we'll see. I run over at thcfarmer too because it's the most active place I can find with rdwc, specifically current culture users.

Would love to get more discussion on these systems and how everyone is running them here!

I'm at 830PPM right now at the 500 scale and the girls love it, there isnt any burning what so ever the one plant recovered and they have literally doubled in size in 10 days. I dont plan on raising the ppm anymore. They are on their 4th day of flower and look amazing. Plants are about 20" tall with stalks bigger in diameter then a quarter. leafs bigger than my hand BIG THICK leafs. I'm amazed at this system.

I'm in flush right now so nothing but the roots plus water and my EC is at .3
I follow the cultured solutions chat and never had a problem, but I also have a 50 gal reservoir going to main bucket... only time my EC climbs higher than it should be is always week 6 thru 8, so this time I didn't follow the chart and I didn't have to make any adjustments mid week... like taking 15 gallons out and putting 15 gallons of straight city water back in....
