If they are like tomatoes, I take it they were potential root sites had that part of the stock been under soil.
 
yep, growing plant tissue. from the base or the plant up to the first set of true leaves can produce roots if covered with damp soil

Great group of people and ton of knowledge over there, you'll learn for sure, and will be easier since is more geared toward massachusetts (sort of)
