Help me figure out how to vent my room.

I have a small 2ft x 8ft x8ft room (closet) in a basement and it's 'sandwiched inbetween 2 rooms, my office and bedroom to be specific. One of the 2ft walls is actually touching an outside wall, but it's concrete and only about 1ft of it is actually not underground, then I have about 8" of wood that I could somehow drill through to vent to outside. Problem is then it's about a foot and a half above the the floor when you're standing next to it outside in my backyard. Here's some pics to give you a rough idea of what I got going on as of now.

My entrance from my office.

3 Sour Diesel from clones, one of them is not doing good.

1 x 150W HPS, got another 2 of these if needed.

Timer and shelf that holds the balasts towards the left.

On top of my grow box I keep an ionic breeze type dealio, the Diesel is way too stinky already.

Unfinished project #2 is my grow box, don't have a fan nor lights installed yet, it's about 25"x30"x32". Probably just gonna line it with 2ft cfl, I think 4 or them should be enough. I still have to figure out how to vent that out, too. Without light leaks. I got some parts, but still gotta spent some more money it seems, here's what I have so far:

  • 1x 8" inline fan - I wanna use that to vent outside somehow, still gotta get tubing for it. Needs a dimmer switch cause it's crazy loud.
  • 1x 8"coffee can - Thinking about making myself a carbon filter with it, should somehow get fitted to the 8" fan or tubing connecting it.
  • 1x cheesy old bathroom fan - Thinking about mounting it in the wall to pull cooler air in from my office. Not sure if it's a good idea actually?
  • Several PC fans - Circulation and ventilation of the growbox could surely be handled by that.
  • 3x 150W HPS - I plan on using 2 for flowering, not sure what to do with the third. If I can get it cool enough I could use that as well.

Anybody wanna help me brainstorm on this? It's really important I get something figured out soon. I am about to take some clones off these babies, set them up in the grow box then hook up another HPS for flowering.

Thanks.

Well as for the venting if your concerned about the smell get a scrubber or make one, if your concerned bout someone feeling the air or seeing the vent, my suggestions plant a plant there whether it be a small bush, bushy flowers, you get the point... As for cooling you could possibly branch off your main and run it in there or... well thats the only thing i can think of that wont take up space... OH YEAH it wouldn't be too easy but you could get a tiny potable air conditioner, Put it outside in a stealth box or something the run the output though a hole in the wall to the grow room, but i wouldn't do that unless you were desperate... any questions just ask

I am not sure what you mean by scrubber, is that some sort of filter? I can't plant anything there since the vent would actually be a few feet into my patio. The only thing I could think off is maybe if I put some sort of storage cabinet on the outside. Can't branch off my main, assuming you mean AC duct, since I don't have central air. The entire basement is finished, so I am not trying to rip open any ceilings if I don't absolutely have to. An airconditioner would probably be the best idea, maybe even an indoor one, but I am pretty much broke.

A scrubber is basically a box filled with activated carbon which basically removes the smell, Yes... Yeah a cabinet would work great, you could put vents on the back for stealth and lock it (wouldn't be out of ordinary, say its grilling stuff or yard working stuff or something that you don't want stolen)... As for the vent, is the patio wood or concrete?

Ok, that's what was thinking of doing with the big coffee can I had laying around. I saw this one guy's guide which was basically putting activated charcoal inside these porus bags and filliling a coffee can with it then venting through it. I actually have a stainless steel cabinet that is excactly for what you saidl BBQ etc. I can ask if my father-in-law would let me put it there. He's in on my grow so it's just whether he would mind having it in that spot. The patio is actually made up of concrete slabs, 12"x24" each, it would definitely be noticeable, I can take pics when it's light out tomorrow.

But I do, his wife thinks grass is as bad as heroin or crack. She thinks none of us smoke, meanwhile she and my son are actually the only ones that don't smoke. i'll definitely will take pics tomorrow.

Damn... It's nowhere near the level of that shit... An ok once u get the pics up ill see what its like and make some suggestions...

Ok so I went outside this morning and re-measured where I thought the room would be, but I messed up and I have some good news; Seems the room is actually off the patio and halfway above a flower bed. So I might be able to plant a bush there or something, now I just gotta figure out how to get through that outside wall without destroying the vinyl siding. :/ The two bottom rows of siding have wood behind them, a few inches thick and might be hard to drill through. We had a hell of a time trying to get through that part, in another part of the basement, to get satellite cable run.

Well know that you know its above a flower bed that makes it alot easier... As for the pic theres a few things that are kind of confusing 1. Is the room behind the concrete in that red box. 2. what is that reddish thing sticking out of the top left corner? Assuming you have to drill behind the bottom two rows of siding would it be at all possible to pop of the bottom rows real quick then drill the hole? As for drilling it shouldn't be that hard drilling through a few inches of wood, the only problems i could see the bit not being long enough or your drill not being powerful enough... if your bit isn't long enough then just go buy a longer bit, if your drill isn't powerful enough i suggest investing in a high powered non-cordless drill, those things will go through just about anything if you give them time. Also i just though of this what you're doing here will be more that just a small 1/4 in hole or somthin, you gonna be making a hole about the size of the fan you're using so just a drill wouldn't really be able to complete the job... any more questions?

Thanks for the reply, Yes the room is behind that red square, give or take a few inches. I know because that 'reddish thing' is a water spigot that I have to turn off for the winter inside my room. I tried to draw up a schematic, maybe you'll get a better idea of what I got going on here.

I am assuming I would have to pull the siding, otherwise it's gonna get wrecked. The wood is so hard to drill through cause the house is like 60 years old and it's tough as all hell. I had to make a similar hole on the other side of the basement for a dryer duct. I am probably just gonna drill a whole bunch of holes in a circle then break it out with a hammer, took hours last time, but my bit was dead too. So it looks like I'll definitely have to buy a bit or maybe even a hole saw?

I found this DIY carbon filter here. It looks like it would work best for my needs and seems really easy to make and inexpensive. I just gotta figure out how to run the tubing.

Ok this thing was on the back burner for a bit, but I started working on it again. So I went to Home Depot and picket up some parts to hook up to my 8" inline fan, but I am running into problems. Here's what I came up with so far:

PICT1501.jpg
First I connected the fan directly to a 8-6" reducer then right to a 6-4" reducer.

PICT1511.jpg
This design didn't work out too well. When I plugged it in it didn't feel like it was pushing any air at all. Something was wrong, maybe I hooked the fan up backwards? I took the whole thing apart and flipped the fan to no avail.

PICT1505.jpg
I laid the exhaust down and while smoking a phattie it came to me. I don't think it was working because of the two reducers right in a row.

PICT1514.jpg
I found an empty 6" coffee can that I mounted between the two reducers. I also taped up any interior seems, so it would reduce friction for better airflow as well as less noise.

PICT1515.jpg
There's a lot more room now, but It's still not as strong as I had hoped. this thing is supposed to be 180CFM, but my 90CFM bathroom fan still seems stronger at the exhaust port.

PICT1516.jpg
This is what It looks like now.

PICT1516 now.jpg
This kinda shows what I think the problem is. I think that because the fan blades are so close to the first reducer that there is way too much turbulence to make a cyclone which just makes the air whirl around in there instead of getting pushed out.

PICT1516 fix.jpg
If my reasoning is right and I am not just too stoned, moving the fan back or adding an 8" spacer should let it create the vortex needed to push the air out more efficiently.

Any thoughts? I hope I am not wasting my time with this fan :/

hmm..that inline fan looks kinda small and cheezy for an 8". are u sure thats an inline fan?

This is my 4" inline and it looks more heavy duty than yours.............

It's actually one of those stove top fans for sucking kitchen smog out the side of the house. Is that a problem? I figured a 8" fan can push more air with the same rotational speed as a smaller fan with less noise.. I probably over complicated things again and bought the wrong shit.. again :/

It's a 180 CFM fan for a 2'd x8'w x7'h closet. It should air it out in less than a minute at 117 cubic ft.

I blew smoke into it, hung a plastic bag off the end of it and had it blow onto my hand.

Doesn't matter I redesigned the whole thing and might not even be using that fan.
