Help me design my grow closet

Hey guys. This is my first post here long time lurker, finally going to take the plunge and start growing. The area I'm working with is a 2' X 3' closet with a slanted back wall at about a 60 degree angle. I am hoping to maximize space and get at least 6 plants in there, ideally 8. I have read that a general rule of thumb is 1000 lumens per sq ft. So I figure that I could hopefully get away with a 400w hps/mh combo NEW GROW LIGHT DIGITAL 400 WATT HPS AND MH 120 240 VOLT - eBay (item 120466951917 end time Sep-11-09 13:43:24 PDT)
^that one. I'm not sure if this light will be sufficient. I could also add a few CFLS to supplement. I was also thinking I could go strictly CFLs to keep the heat down... but I don't know if it would be practical to grow 6 plants under CFLs because I would need like 600 watts. Could I use Cfls on such a large scale? Looking for any advice or suggestions.

im working in a closet and using a 70 watt hps and 9 23 watt cfls my area is 5'L x 2'W 8'H i can grow 8-10 plants easy are you thinking about oder control ?

400 watts of CFL and 400 watts of HPS will put out the same amount of heat
The only difference is that the CFL's are spread out and so is the heat they put off
An HPS will put off all the heat from one bulb that is why it is though to be hotter
Go with the 400 watt HPS and make sure to get an appropriate exhaust fan

Could I really grow 8-10 plants with just 250 watts jar87?

ive had no problems....... get about a ounce a plant but its kinda a sea of green technique depends on what kinda yeild you want im sure i could get more if i hooked up my 400 watter. the cfls are nice because i can put them anywhere on the plant i think needs more light but they need to be kept within a few inches of the plant so your always adjusting them

also im perputaul so some of my plants will be small some are large i let them grow about 4 feet

you only get an ounce per 4 foot plant? That seems pretty low... I plan on LSTing so hopefully that will up my yield a bit. I think I am going to go all CFL just because it will allow my plants to get much taller and I can maximize the space in the closet. So If I had 400 watts I could grow 8 plants no problem? Maybe more?

I would go for 6 in a 3x2 area but if you want a qp per plant you would need more space/light and more veg time i flower at 12-14 " with alot of plants in a small area they are so close together the lower branches get very little light so there isnt as much product on them . LST helps but ive found to get more yeild you need to veg longer espcially when you top or you just end up with a smaller plant and depending on how much patiance you have it could work for you but they will get bushier so plan for it

I plan on vegging for 6-8 weeks maybe longer, I want one row to be about 18-24" and the other to be about 42-48." I was hoping for a yield of around a pound to a pound and a half.

you might want to consider buying a grow tent and finding a bigger space to work with closets are ok but you get out what you put in .
