plants have been planted from seedlings two weeks ago today, and about half of them look like theyre sick or something. theyre turning yellow, curling, and some leaves are even brown on the tips. the other half look fine which is weird since theyve all had the exact same water and light. i dont think ive been overwatering them, and i know its not nute burn since i havent been feeding them yet. i transplanted them 2 days ago from cups into potting soil and perlite and theyre now about 2-3' under a 400w hps rather than the flourescent i used when they were smaller, but they were starting to get like this before i moved them. any ideas?

Hi 5.0,

Were they okay before you switched to the hps? If they were okay under the floresent light I would recomend that you put them back under that light until they have about 3-4 nodes. This way you can keep the light about an inch away and thay are not too hot. When the girls are this young they are more suseptable to stress than a more mature plant. The 400 hps is too much for their age group. The hps lamp is an excellent choice for the flowering stage because of the warm spectrum (red, orange)there. However during the vegging stage of their life they need a cool spectrum, which is blue.

Hope this helps ya out some, keep us posted.
ALSO, as long as they are this young and in soil nutes or ferts should not be added until 4-5 nodes. So you are right on track in that respect, good call.
Have fun...

thanks userfriendly, thats kind of what i was thinking too. all the ones doing this are the smaller ones, since theyre just random seeds i guess some are just faster growers than others and therefore need less water.

brasmith: they were starting to turn a little yellow before i moved them. the flourescent light i was using is just a standard 5' two bulb shop light from walmart, i think the bulbs are 32W but im not positive. anyway, i figured this wouldnt put off enough light once they were more than a few inches tall. since im on a budget i just bought a 400W HPS, no MH. would the flourescents be better than this for the time being or should i use both lights?

YOU NEED TO STICK WITH THE FLOURESCENTS TILL THEY GET BIGGER. WHEN THEY START FROM SEED YOU SHOULD TRY TO BUILD UP A ROOTING SYSTEM SO THEY AREN'T GETTING STRESSED OUT. ONCE THE ROOTS HAVE DEVELOPED MORE YOU CAN INCREASE THE LIGHTING.

JUST MY THOUGHTS THOUGH! GOOD LUCK WITH IT!:bigjoint:

also i meant to ask about size, these seem really small for 2 weeks from what ive seen on here. could it just be the mediocre seeds or is something wrong?

you can use a 400watt light on seedlings as long as you keep it atleast 2 feet above the plants!i know from personal experience!its overwatering thats causing the problem and so the roots are suffercating and thats slowing growth imo!plus if theres peices of wood and big stones in ya soil that can slow things to!

Personally I have found that when starting from seed mild lights seem to work out best. One reason is is that you can bring the lights in real close to the plants and that will keep them warm. Less chance of the plant stretching and causing it to be long and lankey.

Let's get to the yellowing of the leaves. From my experience and what I can see in your pics, they do not look overwatered thay actually look like they could be low in nitrogen. So, what kind of soil are you using? Also check your ph because if it is too low or too high they could be locking out the ritrigen they need during veg stage. If you make any major changes to your plants be sure to give them time, (5-7) days sometimes, to recover and get back on track.
