I'm guessing that most people will recommend to do the chop just before/at the end of your dark cycle, a some will say some extended period of darknes [24-72hrs.], a few will say they chop whenever. For the extended period of darkness. I've seen reports with control plants and the growers says that there is no discernible difference, and others claim they do notice a substantial difference. Some say that all strains will benefit from a extended darkness, others claim that its will be strain specific. I'm with you on this one. I think it's something you have to try for yourself for a definitive answer as it relates to you.

Ive also heard about this and from my knowledge growers do that because the trichomes are more firm and visible during there night phase of growth, hope that helps.

I think the general concensus is to let the plant sit in 24-36 hours of darkness then chop the plant. Also, dont water the plant a few days before chop to speed up drying.

In several Mel Frank books (off the top of my head it's in Marijuana Growers Insiders Guide), he talks about an experiment where he was testing samples of a bud throughout a flower cycle to find THC/CBD ratios and concentrations. His regular samples were all taken in the light cycle each day, but toward the end flowering he started taking some samples after 8-10 hours of dark and found that these samples contained up to 10% more THC than the samples taken during the daytime. This is the only actual verification I have seen of this, and I suspect his testing was the origin of the whole practice.

Edit: A lot of testing has been done on THC to CBD degradation, and it has been found that light exposure caused the highest levels of degradation (followed by heat). I believe mel frank hypothesized that this was the cause of higher THC levels accumulating through the dark part of the cycle.
