Harvest Help Please!

Hi i'm fairly new to growing. I've read lots of grow guides and have come to the realization that i have alot of options with this. I have a plant that's about ready to harvest that's growing outdoors. What I can't seem to figure out is how exactly to harvest. I'm preparing an indoor growroom for winter and have tried to explore my options on moving this outdoor plant indoor for continuous growth. I've heard that you can keep a plant growing year round, but is that before you enter it into the flowering phase? Is it possible to trim the buds and move it indoors for the winter and continue growth as if it were starting new? Another route I was looking at was topping and taking the buds from that, while continuing to grow the less formed bottom buds. Is that possible or just another vegatative trick? I'd like to continue the budding process indoors somehow, or atleast use the plant as a mother or something. Please get back to me asap, it's starting to get cold outside!
