Growing in a Freezer Box. (could use some help)

We are at the beginning stages of our project and don't know where to start. I have never grown before and hope this works out.

Anyone have any suggestion on how I should get this going. Im going to make a run to Home Depot soon.

Questions:

1.) Should I attach the lights to the lid of the freezer? Suggestions? How strong of a light do I need?

2.) Smell! I plan on making a carbon filter which should help out with that. Tips?

3.) What kind of fans? Computer fans?

4.) Anything else??????????

Heres my freezer: Its 2 1/2 ft deep. Think thats enough room? I plan on trimming the plants as short as possible.

Needs to be stealth! 5 plants max.

hydro/soil?

I havn't really thought about the plants yet. I have a buddy who is currently growing and is going to give me a few plants.

I would appreciate ALL the help you can give me. I really want to get this started.

well also like to say welcome to the rollitup community. always nice to see new people on here.

if its only 2 1/2 feet deep or 30 inch's then you are ganna have to keep it real small. If you count in how tall the container ur growing in is and how low the lights are or what kind of lights its ganna only give u a small area to grow in.

actualy i have a grow that is in a container that is 30 inch and i only have about 18inch to grow but its good enough. but that is in hydro and u can use shorter containers then when using soil. but if using hydro u have to have air pumps going which make noise.

one thing that you can do is scog look it up. its involves putting up a screen type thing up and growing ur plants thru that and feed the plants thru it as they grow. they end up with nugs on top and it helps keeps ur plants low .

You also need to deside which type of lighting you want to use. you can either do HPS or MH which are HID (high intensity discharge) or u can use CFLs (compact floresent lights) or floresent tubes.

you really should read some info in the FAQ page... really would help you

well ur prob ganna have to take off the outer shell to see whats all under the shell and where it is so u can drill around that..

then ur ganna have to either use a few computer fans like i did but u cant do much about the smell or u can buy blower fan or something that will push lots of air out of ur freezer. but the bigger they are the louder they are . but if u have one exhaust the u can have a carbon filter to eliminate the smell. but u also have to have a intake hole to let air in. exhaust the hot air on top and have it intake cold air from the bottom.

a lot of things also depend on how stealth it has to be...

here is my Grow.. havent updated for a while its in week 5 of budding and here is what i got now

I would look into some T5's as the lighting with a setup like yours. Heat would be minimal and you should be able to attach them to the inside of the lid.

It seems to me like the most effective lighting arrangement would be mounting t5 bulbs or a whole lot of CFLs on the top. An HPS would certainly have heat issues since it is only 30 inches deep.

There are several guides to effective DIY carbon filters on the site. I cant all of the exact materials but use the search feature and you should be able to find one of the threads.

As far as ventilation goes, you would probably need quite a few computer fans to keep it cool. Since smell is an issue I wouldnt recommend making too many holes in the freezer; maybe find some slightly larger fans, one for intake and one for exhaust.

Temperature is definitely important, make sure you invest in a thermometer too.

The inside is already white so reflectivity shouldn't be an issue unless you want to strip out the insulation for more room, which may be desirable. In that case you would need to get some mylar, emergency blankets, or panda film.

I DITCHED THE FREEZER BOX.

OK guys, thanks for all the help!

I just got a free fridge/freezer and plan on making it very similar to the "refriginator".

My only problems are:

Where should I keep all the wiring/chords? Is it safer for it to be below the grow or above it. (heat rises). The guy who built the refriginator" put them in the freezer department and made a heat sink? Wtf is that?

The temperature right now it is around 25 degrees outside and am starting to wonder how im going to control the temp inside the fridge? I don't want to use the fridge/freezer to keep it cool, i don't trust it. I plan on keeping it in the garage for now.

How big should my intake and exhaust fans be? I bought a 4in fan for my intake but i think im going to return it and get something bigger.

Today we added locks to the doors, cleaned it with bleach and have taken out the compartment between the fridge and freezer. Tomorrow we are buying some reflective metal for some good reflection. Where can I get this? Home Depot? Whats it called again? I heard not to use foil. True?

So I guess ill be using hyrdo instead of soil if I get better results inside of a fridge. You guys are the pros, which one should I use if im growing in a fridge? Does the soil affect what lights to use? Qualtiy?

Went out today and picked up 4 24inch 75 watt grow lights, that im going to use on the front and back walls of the fridge. Will these work? Too much light? Can there be too much light? I also got a 24in 17 watt black light for the inside. Is this neccesary, do black lights help? For the main light im going to be buying a nice HID light, i checked them out today and found one, costs about 300 for the setup. Sound right? Its 400 watts. If this too weak or too strong, or is it perfect? I dont want it to get too hot i there, but thats why ill have an intake/exhaust fan.

Last but not least I plan on starting out using clones. I have a buddy that im pretty sure i can get them from, but if that falls through, where can I get them? Are the craiglsit posting real? Safe? If you have a cannabis card in Cali? Do most clinics carry clones?

Sorry for all the questions, but I will apreciate all the help I can get!!! Thanks.

that 400 watt light is ganna get way to hot in a mini fridge unless u have great ventalation i think for a mini fridge a 250 would be good plus u have the other lights for the side ... and so the leaves dont burn if u get a metal screen and make a cage around the tube lights it helps... the wires should be on top just incase of any water or anything.. i dont know about craigslist clones but i know if u have ur medical card u can get them at a lot of shops... around where do u live i can help u find a shop.... it would be better to get it from there rather then a friend cuz what they have a good clones from good strains...

does the freezer work? lol that would solve any heat issues. i would do hydro/bubbleponics. 1 duel air pump will do job with a few airstones for good measure. the pump will not make any more noise than a freezer makes. who would know its not the freezer running normaly. the drain on the bottom will make it simple to drain. from what i have seen on this site the hydro takes less root space for big plants. so go 1/3 for roots and 2/3 for plant. as for lighting if the freezer dont run hid will get to hot and all the mods to freezer for cooling light will unstealth it . t5 is the way to go. homedepot sells 2,3 and 4 ft ballast and bulbs. they come with 30k bulbs and 1000bulbs.com sells 65k bulbs. they are not high output ones. the 4ft ones are 28watt bulbs wich is half of high output and half the temp. you just need twice the bulbs to get the same results of high output ones. the are $35 for 1 ballasts that hold 2 bulbs that are included. you have some wiring to do, basic shit. i would screw them right to the lid, as many that will fit. it looks like the 3ft ones will fit perfect. they are 21watt per bulb. i use those lights and the work great. the plants can touch bulbs for a while without burning. i also have a room with 2k hps so i can tell you those t5 do work. you just have to keep the close to canapy. have one ballist that is adjustable. the rest on lid. after seeing you picks i wanna do what your doing for my moms. great stealth idea. i'm going to watch you, keep us informed. i'm looking at my broken dish washer......spinning plants or aerogarden :bigjoint:

---So far we have covered the inside of the doors with mylar for reflection. Contemplating putting more.

---Put door locks on both fridge and freezer.

---Attached two hangers on the top of fridge so we can hang the lamp, also is easy to adjust instead of moving the plants closer.

---Purchased this 4in. duct fan for the air intake on the bottom. Is this the right fan to use?

---Purchased an 8in duct fan, like the one above for the exhaust fan, which is going to be attached to a carbon filter. Are these duct fans going to work? Any suggestions on fans, where i can get the in stores?

---I plan on using "emilys Garden" and only putting 4 plants in there. I think this would be the most cost effective set-up and would be good for me (beginner). Can I grow from start to finish (harvest) w/ emilys garden??

---As for LIGHTS
I picked up a 300 watt hps w/ ballast. I think this is perfect. We are also going to line up 24 in 75 watt florescent lights on the walls for more light.

---All I need to pretty much do is drill the holes for the intake/exhaust...hook up the fans...and im ready to get this thing going!

Hey, thanks for the tips!

San Francisco is where I will like to get my clones.

You think emilys garden will be a good set-up for me?

---Also, how am I going to control the temperature inside? I want to keep it in the garage and its 17 degrees outside, so its not much warmer in there. I think the 300 watt hps would help heat it up, maybe? What happens when the temp is hotter. in the 70's?

O yea,

IS IT SAFE TO KEEP THE "FRI-AUNCE"(dont know the spelling)" inside the fridge? Will the heat be a problem? Should I remove it...I think its illegal and very dangerous.

It's not dangerous really. But it is illegal because it is bad for the environment to leak it out.
