Grow box lid necessary?

Hey. I am growing in a DIY Grow box, basically a cardboard box with reflective material. However, I am having trouble keeping the temps below 28 Celsius at canopy level as my CFLs give too much heat for that small space and was wondering if just taking the box lid off is ok or is the lid mandatory? With the lid off the temps go down a bit. I have to mention the lid is the only part that is not covered in reflective material so it does not reflect the light even if it is on.

Using flat white paint is almost as reflective and reduces heat
