Great Cheap Way to Lower Humidity: Cat litter

Can't afford to buy and run a $150 dehumidifier? Then you should use desiccants. The best desiccant is silica gel.

You can get mass loads of silica gel at the super market or any pet store by buying the "silica sand" or "crystal" Kitty Litter.

My grow is in my basement and I almost lost it to bud rot due to 100% RH. Earlier today my humidity was at 100% but then I put a bowl of this kitty litter in front of the exhaust and when I went back to check on them the RH was at 20%

so does your exhaust, expel inside? because I have a little high RH but my exhaust goes outside. so i wounder if just putting it in the room would help...:-|

i would like to run my dehumidifier less. im going to give the kitty liter a try :)

lol i run a 7000 watt system and sumtimes in my larger room my humidity gets to 60% and that worries me . i would like to know if this work even though it sounds far fetched

bump! i'm interested in this. my temperature range is 73-81 and humidity is around 45-51 right now. i'm two days away from flower~what do you think?

I'm going to bump this for educational purposes. I'm interested in knowing if this works, by more sources. Humidity is just the measure of moisture the air can hold, so do you think it's possible the litter catches moisture?

This is extremely dangerous. Silica cat litter is cancerogenic, even cat owners don't use it. When you breath it, it sticks to your lungs. Many construction workers died because of breathing silica at construction sites... You don't want to let your plants and yourself breath it.

@jagu bro just sussing that cat thing dude your kinda wrong how is one going to ingest a solid that stays solid?? and there couldnt be any by-product from it either... cat lovers are steering clear cause its toxic to eat!!

And im gonna use it in my grow now! 2kg of cat litters 8bucks should be enough to sort my 84%humidity problem haha

isn't perlite mostly silica? i've been feeding liquid silica to my plants for a while now and smoking the results. i don't buy this. silica is used for millions of things from glass to fiberoptics to food production. large particles sitting in a dish are not going to pose a threat to anyone :roll:
