gravel as medium in dwc??

I suppose you could. It's just a medium. Clay pebbles are pretty cheap.

Gravel prbly wouldn't be a good choice.

The only stone/soil yard type stuff that I would use is lava rock..
If you need several cubic yards of grow rocks at a reasonable price a good option is to go about 40% expanded shale and 60% lava rock..
You can find lava rock in bulk for as cheap as $30US per cubic yard... They'll dump it in the back of a truck for you on the cheap.

As far as bagged clean media goes... Sunleaves ROCKS! is a good low cost option. As with any grow rock.. rinse well.

You could prbly just use straight lava rock.. most nursery soil yards sell bulk pricing 5 gallon "bag it yourself" bags.. That is prbly the absolute cheapest yet usable small amount of grow media you are going to find.

I have never grown hydro in straight lava rock.. but.. i bet it would work ok.

Google stone and/or soil yard in your area.. some places might even sell you a quarter cubic yard for like 10 bucks..
