Nothing will happen to the plant. The adult gnats don't eat the plant, but the gnat larvae in the soil do eat the roots.
The sand will just stop them from laying more eggs in your soil and they'll go away.

well then i might not have fungus gnats, wtv i have is under the leaves,,, theyr very small white worms!!!

yep sand or saw dust works.there larva eat the stalk of your plant and the gnats lay them in the soil,put some sticky traps up and give them a spray with some insecticide but you will not get rid of all of them but you can knock there numbers down considerable.

"White worms," kinda sounds like thrips. Have you noticed any clusters of tiny black spots, or white bleached spots on the leaves? I like treating pest with homemade soap sprays and sticky traps. Works good with minimal plant stress. Most pest dislike a foliar spray of SM-90 as well. If thrips are your problem, you can try garlic also.
