Germination problem

Hello Rollitup Community!

I am a newbie grower having problems with the germination stage. My seeds are almost 2 years old but they were kept in a cool, dark place.

I have 2 mediums; paper towel (3 seeds) and a glass of distilled water (4 seeds) maintained at 28 degrees Celcius (I live in a avery hot country) were the techniques/mediums I've used.

It has been 48 hours and the seeds being germinated in the glass of water has not sprouted at all. For the paper towel medium, it has been 24 hours and still also no signs of growth.

I was told that within 48 hours, there should be signs of growth. If not, it means the seeds are useless?

Are there any mistakes in my procedures? Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)

It's best to soak them for 12-24 hours and then leave them in a moist medium. Sometimes they take longer to germinate. I've had plants pop up out of starters after 3 weeks after I'd given up on them.

I disagree that seeds should be soaked whatsoever, unless they are a bit older (like 3 - 5 years). The embryo should be fine if it was healthy.

Older seeds could have dried out embryos which can stand being soaked for half hour.

Plants, and seeds, respire aerobically. They need oxygen. Cannabis is not an aquatic plant. Seeds just need to be warm (72F+) moist and arguably in darkness in order to germinate.

Too much moisture or humidity can lead to damping off (seedling attacked by various ubiquitous pathogenic fungi).

I stick mine in the soil which is in a 5 gallon fabric pot and pour some water on top. Now for the secret......................wait for it.........................................I come back a couple days later and by God I got a seedling. 100% germination rate fir 3 years running.

That's the idea. 5 gal might be a bit much (not easy) for many to start in though. It'll work if watered properly.

What'll happen if I soak them for more than a day or two? I still haven't removed them in the medium. Hoping to see some tap roots before I transfer them into a soil medium.

Appreciate the info! Does soaking it too much kill the seed? And what does soaking the seed with water actually do? What is your way of germinating?

My seeds are also of age though; 2 years old. Train wreck and Northern Lights!

Every when do you water? Soaked mine in water for over 3 days now.

2 years old really isn't very old. The embryo inside the side is still relatively 'fresh', it should not really have dried out at all if stored properly.

Soaking a seed in water too long deprives it of oxygen and can cause the seed to rot sooner or later. Water itself doesn't hold oxygen very well. Roots breath oxygen taproot included. Lack of oxygen also encourages growth of pathogenic microbes.

Seeds much older than a few years could stand to be soaked for about a half hour. Such short periods of time aren't likely harmful to any Cannabis seeds. Some products such as mycorrhizal inoculants, instruct that seeds be soaked in solution with the spores for about this amount of time. Soaking for prolonged periods is not necessary and could be harmful for the aforementioned reasons.

My perspective is it is best not to fuss with them at all while they are sprouting, so I put them directly into potting soil (16 oz cups). About 50% Sunshine Adv. Mix #4 with 25% coco coir, 12% compost and 12 % vermiculite. Watered thoroughly after seeding. Warmed with a heating pad and\or T5 lighting immediately if necessary.

Seeds can take from 3 days to a week to germinate, which is too long to soak them for.

These seeds come all the way from Amsterdam which we took home! We live in a very hot and humid country and it was just stored in a box for years. Maybe in the process, it dried out? Would you know how to check if the seed is rotten already? I was told to leave it in the dark till the root sprouts? When do I place it under lighting? Thanks for the reply!
