CFLs are the most commonly used because they cheap as hell and work great for the cost.

T-12 lamps are inefficient and not ideal but usable (and the most common), however two 48" bulbs putting out 3000 lumens a piece only covers about 1sq ft efficiently and since the bulbs themselves are 4' long this is a problem.

T-5 lamps are high output and perfect for growing, they are a bit more costly though.

T-8 horticulture lamps also work well.

As far as initial investment goes CFLs are cheapest.

Welcome to the forum. You can purchase tubes for that 4' flourescent fixture that will let you veg 6 plants in 8" pots. The run about $13.00 max at Menards. T-5's according to my hydro shop will match the growth you can get from hid lighting. You should check out videomans grow journal if you want to see how they work. VV
