So I'm most of the way done curing. with the exception of a bit of trouble with prematurely placing my buds in jars when they still needed to dry a bit, and a failure of cloning, I'm happy to announce my first grow went better than I ever could have dreamed of.
I wanted to say thanks to all of RIU for the support, resources, and help along the way.
When I first posted here I hoped that I would avoid most of the pitfalls of a newbie grower, and I think I've done well. I certainly learned a lot doing it first hand for the first time, and hope that my second set will be even better than the first.
So, as requested I'm doing a final recap/debriefing.
8 total plants grown 4-chemdawg 08, 2-sour diesel x maui wowie hybrids, & 2-banana kush.
these were vegged for 8-9 weeks under 24/0 fluorescent t5 lighting, grown in roots organic original soil with twice weekly watering, no nutes in veg (I'm doing my second set with nutes and they look HUGE compared to the first set)
they were then moved into flower for 8-9 weeks under 12/12 600W HPS lighting, and using the roots organic line of liquid nutrients on a once weekly feed and once weekly water cycle. About week 4 they were trimmed--or lollipoped if you will.
We cut down our little girls and hung them up to dry for about 4 days, but the humidity in the house must have been higher than I expected as they were NOT dry enough yet. jarred them up for a few days before deciding to further dry them on a screen before curing them.
We netted about 1.2 pounds of bud and 3 lbs of knock you on your ass butter off of these 8 plants. After smoking all three, I'm happy to announce they're HELLA stoney (and hella is not a word I use often), but they're dank, crystalline, and got me REAL high...good news is that i had inadvertently put on a netflix of feeding time at zoos, and all of my roommates giggled at baby animals for an hour before ordering pizza. But back onto the analysis. I think the that banana kush grew the weirdest, but netted the largest colas, it has the best smell of all three strains, but tastes second best after the chem dawg. the sour diesel maui wowie hybrid grew the densest nugs, and was by far the easiest to trim, and has a very nice nug structure but is not terribly frosty compared to the other strains. Now onto the chem dawg, which I'll be honest, was my least favorite of the three while it was growing, it seemed the least bushy in veg, and in flower had the most popcorn looking nuglets. Now, after drying it kept its shape/size/weight the best, and it is, in my opinion, the best to smoke.
but all in all, i really enjoyed my first grow. I feel i prepared myself as best as i could with almost over-zealous research about growing, and it ALL came in handy. There were lots of things that I ended up learning on the fly, and figuring out what of what I read was true in my situation, and what was more-or-less old wives' tales. I got all of my clones from a credited grower in town, who said he set me up with some really good genetics, and I think he deserves all of the reputation that he has, and more.
So thanks everybody who helped, it's been real, and its been real fun. More to post from my second grow in progress.
