First time grow- HELP!

My friend and I just started growing a few weeks ago. Since a few days ago we've germinated about 4 or 5 seeds and have planted the sprouts in pots. The pots contained soil from a great compost pile. We didn't bury them very deep in the soil, with hopes that the sun would get things moving. We put some miracle gro water on it twice in the last two days and nothing has happened. Where have we gone wrong? Is it ok to put Miracle Gro multiple times? We are also looking into lighting, since we are in a cold area. Are those curly fluorescent bulbs that go in regular lamps good enough? Can we grow 6 or 7 plants with like 3 or 4 of those? SOMEONE HELP US?

i think u need to do research first b4 starting.

1st. ur seeds are probably dead. dont give them ANYTHING except water within the first 2-3 weeks. and mirical gro is dodgy anyway. its too strong, most ppl only use half or a quarter the recommended measurement.

yes u can grow with CFL's but id be sure to get the right amount of lummens and wattage. it depends really. id head over to the Grow Faq here:

From what I've been told you'll need 6 or 7 BULBS for 3-4 PLANTS at a bare minumum...I'm on one bulb per plant at the minute and they're liking the food at 7 weeks old...

if you check out craigslist you can run across some super cheap god quality lights. I bought a 1000W HPS with a light mover for like $120 bucks. And It beats the hell out a couple cfls. spend a lil time shopping and you might find a killer deal.
