When you're trimming up the sugar leaves, how important is it to get the whole thing? Also, how important is it to get every last sugar leaf?

Right now, everything looks like it's a leaf to me. I don't want to go overboard with the trimming, nor do I want to leave too much or too little on the bud.

(If you can direct me to a good trimming tutorial, that would be great as well. I've seen lots of info here regarding drying & curing, but not much in depth regarding trimming.)

You trim the sugar leaves as close to the buds as possible, trying not to trim the bud itself, yes there will be some small amount of sugar leaves still visible but they too have trichs on them and will smoke just as good.

Trimming should not be complicated. If its all leafy you probably have a hash plant, more sugar leaf than bud, you could make some killer butter or bho if so. I saw a plant that was super crystally but had hardly any buds

But, how bad is it to leave parts/whole sugar leaves attached? I know they still have trichs on them, but don't they adversely affect the flavor and harshness of the smoke?

The more sugar leaves you leave on the buds, the harsher it will make your final product. With that being said, I don't worry about it all that much. I try to get as much as I can by getting as close as I can without cutting into the bud. Whatever is left usually has quite a bit of resin on them anyway. Some of the strains I have grown have been top shelf smoke after everything was all said and done by using this method. It is not that hard at all. It is all about personal preference really. Good luck!

OK, I appreciate the unanimity in the responses. Having never done this before, my overly meticulous nature took over, and I spent nearly an hour working on just one small branch alone. I was trying to get as deep as possible to remove every last bit of every last sugar leaf.
So, it looks like you should just snip off what you can, and accept the fact that you can't do a perfect manicure? I just don't want people to be disappointed. I aim to please.

You're getting the point, youre' being too meticulous, what others have responded is the answer.

I have heard this also but from harvest many many different ways I always end up with the best final product drying the plant as a whole and then trimming and curing it. The smoothest tastiest cannabis I can get my hands on. And yes I can get it from a legit CA. dispensary.
