First Grow on Rollitup

My first Grow on Rollitup... Comments, Questions and Feedback welcome...
Just experimenting to decide which is for me, soil or DWC...? Sooo, i planted some auto's and a few regulars to see which is right for me. Everythng is being grown under a 400w HPS.

Im doing 2 plants in Soil, Speedy Gonzalez and Santa. My mix consists of Foxfarm Oceanic Mix, Foxfarm earthworm castings and bat Guano, Premium topsoil, and perlite. After i planted and got sprouts I put hydroton on the top of my soil to help spread water evenly and hold moisture.

My DWC system is a homade 46 gallon Sterilite with 8 sites housing 5in net pots. Its powered by a 160gph water pump and a dual airpump with 6in stones. Seems to operater pretty smooth but it was a bitch to fill.
PH is steady at 6.5, Im only giving them light nutrients now, 440ppm, mostly rooting hormones.
Ive got six going now, 2 Himalayan Blue Diesel, 1 Bubba Kush, 3 Afghan Kush. Ive got 2 sites open so I have Auto Blueberry and Diesel Ryder germinating..

this sounds like a good thread to follow..

you should grow same strain 1 dirt and one hydro, that way you can get a beter idea of what you like beter both in quality of smoke and in grow method..

Well the AC in the house fuct up, they say they wont be out until friday, its 95 in my room now, i gotta make a hillbilly AC to cool it down..

That sucks. It's 56 degrees where I am today. Perfect conditions indoors, my plants are at 72 with just the ventilation. I dunno what I'd do if it was still 95 degrees in October.

On this grow I have a question about the pH of your Hydro. Why are you running 6.5 right now when 5.5 is ideal?

Have you used your HPS to grow seedlings with before? I find a week or two of CFL lighting works really well. Here's some Big Bud crosses at day 10 in coco with about 60w in day light cfl bulbs.


Things are looking good thus far. I'll stay tuned to see how it goes.

Ive got it down to about 86 now, 4 big box fans is seeming to do the trick when i put Ice bottles in front of them.

My PH is still a little off, im just now getting the res filled, im on #18 of 2 gallon jugs lol, The PH on the spring water i use is set at 7, ill get that all squared away in the next day or so.
I just got a set of 4' T5's so Ill germ/sprout with those next time..

Im anxious to see what it does too. I paid like $3 each for Speedy and Santa, If they produce nice a nice tasting 1/2 oz each ill be happy.

Thanks and I Hope so, Ive bought it but never grown it. It was a fem freebie too. Ive got more strains on the way, but i plan on starting them sometime in December so I can clone them in March for outdoor grows.

I took the advice givin and made a cfl hood last night, 12 lights, about 260watts total, 2700k, 3500k, and 5500k's. Its running alot cooler now.


Ive also been learning a little about how my plants are reacting to my Water system. When I run it on low drip on and off in 2 hour increments, the plants stand higher and seem to do better, opposed to running it 24/7 makes them shrivel up and sag down.

And in the midst of all my AC drama yesterday, my buddy called and said his babies were dying to come get them, so i hopped in the car and came back home with these, the rest were fallen over and dead. now ive got 11 going and not enough room for it all. Id love to get all females but im not sure id have space for them all..

I could tell that he had overwatered them all, leaves are curling under and drooping so I wont water for another week or so

Im soon to find out about thier customer service and No Bull Guarantee as I ordered Rasperry cough, New York Power Diesel, Maui Waui, White dwarf, Santa, Speedy Gonzalez, Papaya, and a few others and they werent delivered to me, tracking says they were delivered but nothing to my adress, Hopefully theyll replace cuz im ready to order again Im gonna collect beans like baseball cards

Are you interested in breeding? I have tons of crosses and seeds I have collected over the years.

Yeah Im really interested in breeding, but i feel like i need to get a grow or at least an auto grow under my belt first. Breeding was my original thought when I ordered 3 Afghans(1 fem'd), and 2 Blue Himalayan Diesels, hoping for a good male and female of each to make my own seeds and save a little cash. But longterm, Id love to breed my own strain and to my likings, isnt that what everyone wants? Their very own "Tailor'd Super Weed" lol

If you want to sub in and help me out, I really appreciate an experienced eye close by to guide me in the right direction. Id be sure to return the favor to you someday if possible.

nice set up man, i am getting a 400w hps tomorrow. its my first HID light i vegged my latest crop with CFL and was really surprised at how good a mix spectrum of lights does for veg could be the DWC system though too. i just started flowering mine 3 days ago. I am really looking forward to seeing your end results.

All of the plants in the DWC look like shit compared to my soil grows. I think im going to go ahead and transplant them all to soil and see how they do, if i loose some, i loose em, ill take it as a learning experience and not run away with my tail between my legs, after looking at other members grows, i kinda think i was going in the wrong direction anyway..

A little update on how i have things set up now.
I put my 400watt HPS in my box and cut a hole in the floor(got bitched at for that one) added another fan and heres how it looks from above.

Now that ive got heat rising and somewhere to pull fresh air from, i fired up the 8" 400CFM exhaust and things are running mid 80's in my box.

If ive learned one thing its that jacking with your plants and not knowing off the bat what medium you want to grow in is a big mistake. Santa and speedy have been untouched since seed, planted in the pots their in now and they are looking great, next time ill just go with that method.

I would continue to grow in dwc. Once learned you will see the difference, not sure about taste or smell but the yield will be more. Do you have a ph pen and ppm reader, both are must have for hydro. Ph more importantly.

In DWC ph should be 5.6 correct?
