Electricity question.

In my basement the electricity is wired by my step father. To get to the room were growing in we have a normal outlet "hanging" from the ceiling. I say it in such a tone because it's pretty secure if you ask me. It then connects to an two outlet extender wire which leads to an extension cord (6 sockets) which then leads into the grow room im useing. Will I have troubles with electricity if I also have other electronics hooked up to the extension cord?

It sounds like you have one outlet with an extension cord plugged into it and thats the only power? If so your not going to be able to power much. Most outlets are on a 15-20amp breaker which isn't much. Also you shouldnt be plugging in your whole grow into a 6 way.

Using extension cords isnt good if your pulling a lot of amps through them. They'll get really hot. The longer the cord the hotter it gets ultimately leading to a fire hazard. Plug directly into a wall socket. One that has its own circuit is best.

You need to specify what all of your equipment's total amperage is. To do this, add up all of the rated wattage of your kit, then divide that by the voltage that is servicing the room you're in.

After that, check what amperage the breaker/fuse is rated for that is servicing the room. The equipment can not be more than 80% of the rated amperage of the breaker. So, if the breaker is 15 amps, you can't go over 12 amps with your gear.

Also, if it is a 15A circuit, use a 12/3 extension cord, no less than that. However, I, like @dannyboy602, am completely against the use of extension cords for high-amperage items such as lights.
