I got a 1000 watt ballast from a friend that Says it uses ED style bulbs and has a picture of a fatter looking bulb like a MH. Im pretty sure it is for commercial large grows. It came with one of those huge umbrella hoods that you see in large gros. I haven't seen these kind of bulbs before and i need to figure out where i can get them. I did a search on google and in some forums and didnt find much. Or can i just use a regular 1000 watt HPS? any info would help greatly!

If the ballast is a metal halide ballast you should not put a high pressure sodium bulb in that ballast.

From what your describing the bulb type looks very large in diamater & looks sort of like a foot ball,if this is the case then you want an 1,000 mh bulb, the bulbs that look like footballs are very old technology & the cheapest type mh bulbs you can buy, shouldnt cost you more than $50 at a brick & mortar store.

You can get any bulb you need right here, the cheapest place on the net.

Thanks for the link!
I says right on the ballast "Use only 1000 W High Pressure Sodium, ED style bulb." and has a picture of a bulb that is fatter than a HPS and skinnier than a MH. It is an older setup. The socket is vertically mounted. Im guessing i can use a regular bulb but i need to figure out how im going to modify it to make it horizontally mounted. have any idea how much efficiency i will be loosing if i leave it vertical?

Im thinking that ED is an abbreivation for the bulb needing to be a vertical mount bulb,im thinking that all new model bulbs can be mounted in either position,30 years ago i used to use these different type bulbs but again i dont think they are made that way anymore but i could be wrong.

As for eficiency you'll be loosing alot of lumens if you leave the bulb in the verticle position, can you buy a new hood & re configure the light with its existing socket ?

I was looking at the hood at the hydro store that is the same as mine except it is horizontally mounted. I seen how they cut a hole through the side for the socket to go through and have a couple bracket that can easily be made to mount my shit horizontally. I have a sheet metal shop with a 10' long break and a sheer. I do some sheet metal work as my job. If I don't find them used for cheap I can make them. although i would b much easier to buy one buy it would save money for other aspects of the g room.
