ebay hps bulbs

hey guys,

i wanted to ask if anyones ever bought hps bulbs on ebay. they claim it can screw in to ur regular household fixtures/ballast.

im thinking of getting 1, but i see alot of hps setups with a big box, wats the purpose of the box? and do i really need 1?

The box is called a Ballast. If it were me, I'd pass on the Ebay offering and get the real deal. That would be a reflecter, a ballast, a socket and the proper HPS light to fit into the socket. Be sure the hood has a sealed glass and two venting holes. You can probably find the entire setup on Ebay. If not, your local hydro store will have what you need.

oh I see, so just getting the bulb without the whole set-up is a bad idea huh?

I'm trying to get away with as little as possible seeing im on a budget.

Some things are worth saving money on, but electrical hook-ups isn't one of them. In fact, when it comes to electrical connections, over-kill is a great idea. Also, keep in mind the old adage; you get what you pay for. If you're really on a tight buget, go with fluros ... but the outcome won't be anywhere near what it could be. Good luck anyway.

you can order 400 watts hps, and metal halide from your local commercial/residential electrition and they come attatched together with a little work you can remove the bulb and make your own hood from polished alum flashing and a rivit gun. whole thing like 250-300

where u gonna put them once they get bigger?

in a 12'x6'x6' underground room myself a friend constructed under his house. completely sealed, drywalled airtight. gonna paint this weekend and will post pics of it prolly sunday. have full ventialtion system with massive carbon odor system deal. lots of money and time into this .
