Ok gaiz, So im not sure if i posted this in the right spot but here goess.
Ive done a few A/B extractions of dxm from Robbitussen DX, but i always get an impure product and a shitty yeild.
Im using shellite (australian equiv. of naptha)
and household ammonia.
The Ammonia i have isnt pure, its cloudy and has soap in it.
So the question is:
What can obtain easily that will suffice as a suitable replacement for Ammonia in my extractions?
Or how can i purify ammonia?
Thanks gaiz, T.H.C out.

My answer is kinda shitty, but its what I can think of.

Seems like getting as close to pure ammonia as possible will help. I can't think of an easier way than just buying ammonia w/o soap stuff in it. Back in the day, you could buy generic "household ammonia" in the USA and that would just be ammonium hyroxide and water (what you want).

I can't think of an easy way to purify the ammonia with normal kitchen stuff, especially when/if you can go buy household ammonia w/o soap.

There is a chance that the "soap" would bind dxm, and that would support your hypothesis for your problem with yield.

Yehh, what happens is that when i mix the ammonia, syrup and naptha together and shake it, the layers dont separate because i think the ammonia/syrup/dxm is all mixed and all dissolves into the naptha.
its really annoying:/

I'm going to assume that you're doing something like agent lemon, and I'm also going to assume that you're giving the layers time to separate out.

I haven't look at the ingredients of 'Tussin in a while. If it has other stuff in there, that could be messing with layering during the step you described.

Ugh, you're using like a very small amount of naptha, right? The procedure that I'm looking at right now says ~1/10th of the volume of (syrup + ammonia) should be naptha, and another says 1/2 inch worth in a 2 liter bottle.
