Drying Without Chopping Plants Down.

Trying to tap the collective experience here. I am days away from harvest and was wondering if there would be any advantage to just stopping the water and leaving the plants intact with the roots to dry? This would be very easy for me to do because I use aero. I could just turn of the solenoid valve for an aero chamber and the roots would be just hanging in air. Anyone ever tried this with aero or hydro?
 
Humm never really thought about doing it that way interested to see if anyone has...

I did this in soil and it took almost 2 weeks for the plant to actually "die" before it started to "dry." Not sure I'd do it again, it might have been better to keep it alive those extra two weeks and then chop it.

With no medium to retain water it will probably just result in a slower dry time, like if you pulled it and hung it up with the roots still attached.
 
perfectly put. without soil, just plant and roots hanging up would result in a longer drying process . most of us avoid that . not sure if longer drying has any benafits, not like curing, whhich you want to take your time with to preserve flavour
 
the biker wo taught me to grow, used to put the roots into boiling water and then hung the plant, roots n all up to dry. we used to grow mexican brick weed seeds and thi grass seeds. both thew strains were from bag seed which used to be stronger then the weed it came from
 
I've just cut the water n lights n shut the room down n left em to die n dry like that...soil...bc I work outta town sometimes n cant always be home for harvest time....I wont do this anymore....now I just leave a wire strung up so the ole lady can cut the plant at the base n hang entire plant when finished if I'm gone....I like to trim the plants personally...I'm OCD....thing with just leaving them in the soil is they're struggling n trying to live before they actually die....its like a slow miserable torturous death...I abandoned this practice

Yep that's the way I did it in College had a room in the top of the barn in the back behind the dried and cured hay took sometimes 20 days to dry but was always some knock out smoke!!!

So dipping the roots is just to get rid of the dirt, I assume?
Otherwise we are bordering on urban legend :bigjoint:
 
lol, yep were on urban legand here, i dont do it myself, even though its the way i was taught to, i just chop colas off and hang them to dry.
having said that, there are many people who dip in boiling water b4 drying and cureing, so i dont know how much is good practice and what is urban legon. i havent done a side by side comparison with 2 clones to see if it makes any differance

Weird, idealy you want a long drying process. Well, at least not too short.
ie,most people shiot for 10-15 days depending on bud size.
I donno but you are the first person Ive ever seen say that “would result in a longer drying process . most of us avoid that”
 
well if you boil the roots, your forceing more water into the plant colas, so it would take longer to dry. i think thats what your saying??????

It is proven and there are a few videos and journals that refer to leaving more stems and green on your plant to slow down the drying process, I only do it because I dry in a 40 to 45% RH room to keep the chance of mold or bud rott down then when dry I put it in sealed containers with 58% humidity packs and let it sit for a week then I try it out...

I was told that that makes the buds take up all the THC and other minerals because it shocks her into thinking she is on fire and pulls in everything she can to try and survive...
 
So nobody has really tried it, except in dirt, which really does not apply. I am considering doing a side by side since I have two separate aero chambers: both in 48 hours of darkness, with two hours of UVB eight hours in then total darkness. But maybe I will just hang one of them with roots so I can proceed to the next grow as I have clones ready to go. Was hoping someone had done this with a sizable n but -- oh well. I am really only dealing with six plants so my results would almost be meaningless as data.

I turned the solenoid off on the one chamber tonight. So I am going to try it. But unless the difference is huge, I don't think the results will necessarily have any real useful information. Though if there is a great difference in taste I will certainly post it here.

LOL, i asked the same question a few months ago but for a different reason: I thought it might look pretty as bonsai type deal.

Didn’t end up trying it because I ended up deciding I wanted it to dry out quicker. Can’t really offer advice apart from what I heard at the time: Cutting water and letting it dry out by dying, essentially, won’t hurt the process but will probably take longer.

I have a botabical breeders book from 1900s explaons boiling roots causes stomas to close to save water escaping and self defence to seed out they resin up.

I did this half my grow.
Boiled water into the coco

The plants done dry 3 days slower as they hold on to moisture more.
The crystsls swell like a bitch.
And the smell bypasses my filter.

The smoke not boiled i smoke it after 8days other is sticky still. Its damn good.

I smoke the boiled roots plant 3days on and fuck me im doing this every time now no shit i had complaints its toostrong

The guy that told me about it was a Fire Fighter he called it fire
training,,, said do it when terpene's are 5 to 10% amber or 3
days before your supposed to chop, said let her dry and cure
for a week then try her, he swore 1 toke no joke, I didn't ever
try it but did try some of his bud it was really good, smooth
shi** good head high,,, 2 one hitters and it was over for about a
hour...
