I recently started gardening in 5-gallon buckets, using this bottom-watering system called "GroBucket":
I have okra, watermelons and peppers growing in this system now.
I have some other plants, such as spices, that could be kept right next to each other, so this other idea caught my attention as a way to arrange the plants all together neatly. I'll share the complete website address.
This person makes it almost idiot proof to build one of these. They even supply a cut diagram to save on lumber waste.

I took the lazy way out and just had the lumber store make the cuts for me, and it was just about $90. $40 of that is labor, so you folks with the tools can do it for about half.
