My idea: I attached my leds to a plate of aluminium, on the other side of that plate i put a lot of computer heatssinks and fans.
I guess the disadvantage of this is that i have 2 layers of heat conducting paste instead of 1, when attaching directly to heatsinks. But idk if this really matters.
On the other hand the L shaped plate allows me to easily mount it to the ceiling with hooks and chains.
Ill be adding 4 more bigger heatsinks in the corners.
For these (a total of 8 heatskinks little bigger as the black one in the middle) + those in the picture i payed together about 15$ on ebay including shipping.

thanks !!! this is really helpful. didn't know if i could use aluminium, i thought it might short out. what are you using as a power supply or driver ? also what kind of paste did you use to attach the led's ? i was going to use high temp ''oven'' glue.

Well it doesnt short out because I bought the leds mounted on a star, if u dont, then u have to be carefull about it...
My power 3x -12€ and its ip67 -means its filled with epoxy and should run underwater, so the metall casing really helps dissipating heat. But for 12€ u dont get a leader in efficency.
When the fixture is finished it will be 64x leds using about 120W @ 650mA

Paste: 30gramms in a Syringe with 1,729 W/m-K for 3-lol € on ebay.
The layer has to be really thin so that it just closes the metall-metall gap, and the stars and heatsinks have to be nicely cleaned up on the back.

I fixiated the leds and also the heatsinks with very small drops of glue on the sides.

For DIY i really like looking at auctions on ebay. U can get heatsinks, fans and what not fairly cheap.

Also I have a 80W soldering iron so its no problem to wire afterwards, when heatsinks r already in place and I use a flux pen.

I follow led tech pretty closely

I would not make anything bigger than 150w at this time. so many solutions are within reach in the next 6 months

Use heatsinks! Do not do as shown on the pictures lax123 posted. Just don't.
Take a look at how I've done it: https://www.rollitup.org/led-other-lighting/695599-my-homemade-120w-led-lamp.html

That heatsink is 300x120x20mm which is fine for about 120W with a 120mm low noise fan attached. I would not put any more heat into that one.

But before you start on building a 600W lamp - DO A LOT MORE RESEARCH. I'm not trying to be mean or to bully you, but you WILL waste all your money if you continue with the current knowledge you have.
I will help you all I can - here or on skype, and I will answer all your questions the best I can. You need more knowledge, a lot more.
