DIY C02 generator question

So I went to the hydroponics store today and was turned onto the idea of making a C02 generator. Thing is, I'm still kinda confused so maybe someone here knows the answer.

I was told to get an aquarium air pump (already have one), locate and remove the intake filter, silicone a 8" or so pvc pipe to the intake.....

And that is where I get confused. So now I have an air pump with a pvc pipe coming out the bottom. Also, I'm growing in soil. So I'm supposed to put bury the pvc pipe in my growing medium or what? Do I have tubing coming out the other end of the pump?

....or I could drive all the way back there and ask
