"Designer" Colors?

Hear me out...

I remember in school as a small kid, we used to take white flowers and place them in food-dyed water. The color would get wicked up to the pedals and change the color of the flower.

I was wondering, if I added some food coloring to my water in the last week of flower (water-only flush) would the buds inherit any color?

If no one has tried this, I am willing, but I thought I would ask in case it has been attempted before.

First, that really only works with white flowers. If you remember, the green parts of the plant didn't really change color. Secondly, it's not good for the plant and would affect bud growth if they're given enough color to cause an obvious change.

The food coloring can't make it past the roots.

That sure is a pretty bud. I suppose it makes sense that the plant's root system would not bother "feeding" the dye to the flowers. Are there any methods to manipulating the color of the developing flowers, to your knowledge?

Some strains change colors when the temp is lowered in flower, usually shades of purple.

The roots WILL suck up the color from food coloring. I have done this before with some plants a friend gave me. I added a couple drops of yellow food coloring into the water and after a day or 2 the leaves turned a lighter green and the veins and main stem yellowed up a bit.
