Deciding when to transplant

I've tried to search through old threads but wasn't able to find an answer.

What conditions do you go by to decide when it's time to transfer to a larger pot?

I just transplanted from starter pots to 1 gal fabric pots on Friday night, so it's only been 5 days. Here they are on transplant day 5 days ago and today.

I transplant when I'm in a time period in a grow run where I have a few weeks for the plants to root out and recover before going into flower. I veg for eight weeks, so I transplant between week four and five of veg.
 
Don't wait for the signs (smaller leaves, slower growth, general unsatisfiable hunger, light sensitivity and the obvious; visible roots covering the outside when pulling out of the pot).. As long as the main stock feels solid and secure in the medium, it can be transplanted
 
To eliminate this question, I use the K.I.S.S. method and transplant day after sprout.

I go from the small nursery pots I start my seeds in straight into 3 gallon pots regardless of whether it's coco or soil. I let them fill out the roots, get a couple of nodes and transplant. You don't need to waste time up-potting multiple times. I'd skip the one gallon in the future.

These plants started in 3.5" x 3.5" nursery pots went straight into 3 gallon pots.

Yeah I think I'll skip the 1 gallon pots next time. They are going into 3 gals as soon as they arrive.
 
What kind of plant height doe a 3 gallon pot support I currently have mine in 2 gallon bags and I was debating when to transplant I have 3 and 5 gallon bags in a standard 4x4 tent so I want to transplant. just not sure whether I should go 3 or 5. I have 3 plants, twice topped and getting bushy.
