NEWMARKET — A huge undercover police sting that saw a medical pot grower dragged through the courts for two years ended with a grand slam in court Thursday — a $10 fine.

“This is ludicrous,” an exasperated Clifford Dawson said outside court. “This cost the taxpayers millions and two years of my life. All for $10? Does this make any sense?”

Dawson, 34, of Innisfil, who walks with a cane and suffers from scoliosis, pleaded guilty to production of marijuana.

“I am satisfied with the joint submission by both counsel for a $10 fine,” said Judge Mary Vallee, who also took into consideration the length of time Dawson has been on bail since his arrest on Dec. 18, 2013.

Dawson had a licence to produce marijuana, which he used to make a topical ointment for pain, but he was only allowed to grow 50 plants at a time and was busted with 150 plants.

He explained the growing cycle has three stages from seedling to plant to flower, and he had about 50 plants in each batch.

“It’s how the herb is farmed,” he said. “I’m not a drug user — I don’t even smoke the stuff.”

Two years ago, 30 armed tactical officers woke Dawson in his home, put him face down and cuffed him while aiming guns at his head.

“They had assault rifles pointed at my pregnant wife,” Dawson said. “It was terrifying.”

Since then he’s spent thousands in legal fees.

His lawyer, Margaret Osadet, says the cost of the seven-week undercover operation, which included tactical and intelligence officers from OPP, Barrie and South Simcoe police, combined with two years in the courts, would be in the millions.

“They had some 30 officers on this case, all-day surveillance, they executed six search warrants,” Osadet said. “And to what end? $10? This is a waste of resources.”

Dawson and Osadet say it’s time to relax the laws against marijuana, which helps many people deal with sickness and pain.

“From my knowledge, the only crime anyone commits while using marijuana is over-eating,” Osadet said.

Two other men were also arrested in the sting. Police suspected they were cranking out the product for illegal sale, but all charges were dropped because of lack of evidence.

It's f'n disgusting, the effort, money, resources allocated to shit like this could solve so many "real" problems. I will continue growing until I die or get busted, if it's the latter I'll use all my resources to fight these fucks and hopefully get some justice for all those who have been persecuted by this "war on drugs" crowd. Can you tell I'm pissed when I see this sort of crap? lol

How many kilos of fentynal went out on the street while these 30 drug cops were spending their time surveying this guy? This 2 buddy's got charged as well but they weren't doing anything illigal and had their charges dropped.

Opiates and the like hit very close to home for me, I've seen their effects and it's not good. My GF was an Oxy junkie for a couple of years after her son died, the doctors kept feeding her that shit as if it were candy, with no other support around her at the time, she eventually became addicted, it was too easy. I met her after she had gone through rehab, and now she won't go near any of that crap, it was just a bad situation and a bad system supporting this sort of "treatment" (???). I have a couple of old friends I see here & there in their mid-fifties who pop pharma pills and they're a mess, mentally and physically. MJ could replace a lot of this crap, yet the system, archaic laws, and some right-wing circles thinking like we're still in the 1950's are holding it back based on nothing but misinformation or twisting the facts like Harper and cronies.

Pretty hard to get elected after you make a bold lie saying marijuana is infinitely worse then tobacco. There's no way a Canada that is overwhelmingly in favor of legalization in some form you can say such things with out turning off a massive amount of voters. It may not be the main issue in this election but it is for most of us.

They should take those millions of dollars out of mr Ambrose unused Botox budget.
It's disgusting they waste all of our retirement money chasing personal vendettas and probably celebrate this none sense over drinks at the country club.

Eye roll much....

Let's hope so, I did like the way the media called him out on his bull-shit statement. Can't believe he'd think he could get away with a statement like that. Then again, I don't think we've ever seen a Canadian politician as corrupt and power hungry as Harper...

I guess they didn't call HC to see if he had a license first?

Lol costed.... such bullshit that they take everyone's pay into account.... fuck they could have been drinking coffee for a week what was the cost for that?

Yes it is a waste of resources. ... called time

Theyre being paid to waste that time so there is a very real monetary cost associated. And the cops knew he had a ppl and raided him anyways.
