crowding plants

Ok, i am new to this forum i would like to begin by saying hello to you all. I have read alot on here and learned alot from just reading. Now i am a bit confused because I have a grower that teaches me how to grow and he tells me that it is bad to bunch up plants because you won't yield as much. Now i know what he is talking about because he yields no less than 500 grams a plant. he is running 16 1000w over 16 plants. in some cases he gets 700+ gs. Now each one of his plants are spaced out i'd say each one takes up 4x4 area.

I am asking if this is true? like i said i am new to this and looking at all the pics here i see all the rooms are small and over crowded.
