critique my soil/hydroton hybrid design!

I'm sure most of you have heard of organic growers using hydroton or sand in the bottom of their buckets for proper drainage and aeration but what about making multiple repeating layers of hydroton/soil/hydroton/soil/hydroton and so on without mixing the layers. I was thinking of doing this in addition to making many small holes in the buckets only where the hydroton layers are for aeration. Would salt buildup be an issue?

So what exactly would the benefit of this be?

I tried this once and threw out a bunch of hydroton because the roots get all tangles on the inside and its one big F'N mess. Use perlite instead unless you want to throw away hydroton.

Also remember that the soil carries most of your nutes so if you replace that with an inert substance such as hydroton you are making less food available.

Did you actually try your idea? I came up with the same idea, in order to get a better drainage, more frequent watering and better aeration. If you did try it, please let me know what you think of it. Thank you!
